What You Should Consider Before Purchasing your Gi
So, what makes a BJJ Gi different? Compared to your traditional martial arts like Karate or Taekwondo, a BJJ Gi has a much thicker fabric. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu utilizes a lot of yanking and tugging on collars and sleeves, so your Gi fabric will need to be very sturdy and resilient to high stresses. When you first purchase your Gi, here are somethings you should consider.
What will you use it for and how often will you train?
First and foremost, you need to first know what you will use your BJJ Gi for. What are you doing BJJ for, are you strictly a hobbyist looking to train once or twice a week? Or are you still unsure if you will be doing BJJ long term? If so, maybe some cheaper Gi options would be better for you. There are plenty of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi’s for under $100. You don’t want to be spending a fortune on a Gi if you are simply testing the waters still.
What about if you are doing BJJ for MMA purposes? If that’s the case, then maybe you don’t even need a Gi. MMA practitioners usually concentrate on the No-Gi aspect of the sport as it can translate into their sport. If you are looking to do No-Gi vs Gi Jiu Jitsu, maybe you should just look into some of the best rash guards and BJJ Shorts instead!
Or maybe you are looking to compete in the big leagues, and plan on training 11 times a week. If that’s the case, you need a solid premium BJJ Gi that can stand the test of time. It might be on the pricier end, but it will be worth the investment if you’re in it for the long haul.
What type of Material and Weave should you get?
One thing to keep in mind when purchasing your Gi some things you will be hearing is material and weave types. These factors can certainly affect your purchase. Whether you are looking to buy something more affordable or something suited for summer training, take a look at the different material types and differences in weaves before making your purchase.
BJJ GI MATERIALS
Cotton – Typically the majority of BJJ Gi’s will be made up of a Cotton material. It is the most common material that you would particularly see a Gi made up of. Sometimes you might see a blended cotton fabric like Twill for additional reinforcement. Cotton is a great choice – its fairly strong, durable, and very breathable. The major drawback though is that they do tend to shrink a lot. Popular Gi’s are often preshrunk and prewashed to minimize the shrinkage, but definitely keep that in mind when purchasing a Gi. Manufacturers often recommend getting a size bigger for these just in case it does shrink.
Ripstop – This material is what a lot of the BJJ Gi Trousers are made up of. They are a great option for the pants because they are super light (usually about 8 – 10 oz) making movement so much easier. The fabric itself is made up of several materials woven together. It’s made up of a blend of nylon, polyester, cotton, and silk. With this material, your uniform can be kept lighter while retaining its structural integrity.
Bamboo/Hemp – These are the more premium level Gi material. Bamboo and Hemp have been added to the mix to provide a much better quality and feel than your traditional Cotton Gi. These are much stronger than cotton. It has a superior breathability with natural anti-microbial properties – which is great if you want to avoid those skin infections! Premium Gi companies like My Lucky Gi and Flow Kimonos incorporate these type of materials in their Gi but these are typically sold at a much higher price tag.
TYPES OF WEAVE
When picking your Gi, they’ll often be described with a type of weave and GSM to determine the quality and grade of the Gi. The term GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter – this simply classifies how heavy/light a Gi. Most Gi’s will also be classified depending on the weave type. Some of the most common ones out there are Single, Double, Gold, and Pearl Weaves.
Single Weave – These are the lightest weave Gi’s available for you. They are great for beginners and they are also super cheap. These Gi’s are excellent for summer training as they are super light, breathable, and easy to move around in. The biggest drawbacks though is that they are easy to grip and more likely to tear.
Double Weave – These weaves are the much stronger and sturdier variation than the Single. They have double the density, giving you a much more rigid feel. Since they’re so heavy, it makes gripping them a little bit harder, giving you a nice competitive advantage. The drawback? They’re extremely heavy and abrasive to the skin! But they are less likely to tear or stretch. A lot of Judogi’s are made of these heavier weaves as they require a lot of tugging.
Gold Weave – The gold weave is a nice sweet spot between the two weaves. It’s sort of a combination between a single weave and double weave Gi. The Gold Weave is the best of both worlds! It gives you the superior sturdiness of a double weave Gi but also gives you the lightness feel of the single weave. This makes them real nice choice for competition grade BJJ Gi’s. These are much more premium so expect to pay a higher price tag.
Pearl Weave – The newest material addition to the market, the Pearl weave has been increasingly growing in popularity. It is a great alternative to the Gold Weave as it isn’t as costly but gives you the same benefits. It gives you the strength and rigidity of a Gold and the lightness of a Single. The weave has excellent moisture wicking properties and has great breathability. Pearl Weaves are a great all-around Gi, suitable for everyday use.
Choosing the Size and Choosing the Color
Before going out to purchase your Gi, its important to first understand the sizing structure. Each company has their own sizing chart on how to gauge what your size.
Generally your Gi size is based off your height, weight, and wingspan. The sizes are usually measured and given an alphanumeric system with A for Adults, F for Females, and M for children. The numbers themselves can range from 0 to 6. As an example, if you were an average height and weight, you will probably be around an A2 or A3 size.
Some manufacturers also do special cut sizing to accommodate body types designating an H or an L suffix at the end of the sizes depending if you are Heavy or Lanky. Also one thing to keep in mind is that most Gi’s do shrink up a bit, roughly up to 10% of its original sizing, so it’s recommended that you get a size larger just in case.
As for the color of you Gi, the traditional colors are White, Blue, or Black. When competing in an IBJJF tournament, they have much stricter regulations. They only allow these three traditional colors. If you don’t plan on competing, or simply want something to add to the rotation, you have various other options out there like gray, green, or pink.
There are a few other rules and regulations when it comes to getting a competition grade Gi. So if you do decide to get a Gi in the basis for competition make sure you read their guidelines on this.
Check out IBJJF Uniform Regulations for more info.
Choosing the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi is no easy task. There are several factors involved in making your choice.
You may want a cheap BJJ Gi if you are looking to just try it out and practice maybe once a week. But if you are looking to do this for the long haul, maybe purchase a higher quality Gi like a Pearl Weave or Gold Weave Gi might be right up your alley. The price might be heftier but the quality you will get out of it is going to be top of the line.
Either way, we have highlighted some of the best overall Jiu Jitsu Gi in the market. Pick one that best suits you! Hope you have developed some good insight on what to look for on your next Gi purchase. Good luck! Train Hard, Roll Safe!
