Frank Mir Faces Off Against Roy Nelson at Bellator 231: Mir vs Nelson 2

This week Bellator is running two shows Friday and another Saturday going against UFC Singapore. The first show Friday is headlines by heavyweight veterans Frank Mir vs Roy Nelson.

Here is a quick breakdown of the main card of this event starting with the main event.

Main Event at Heavyweight: Frank Mir (18-13, 0-2 BMMA) vs Roy Nelson (23-17, 1-3 BMAA)

This a rematch between these two with Frank Mir winning the first meeting at UFC 130 in 2011 by decision. Both fighters are towards the end of their careers trying to snap losing streaks. (Nelson with 3 losses and Mir with 4).

Nelson is a favorite at -185, but the rematch could go either way. Both heavyweights possess some significant KO power and are probably looking to finish the fight early. Mir is also a pretty strong BJJ Blackbelt and he can handle his own if the fight ends on the ground.

Mir won the first fight via decision, can he do it again?

Co-Main Event at Light Heavyweight Phil Davis (20-5 MMA, 7-2BMMA) vs Karl Albrektsson (9-2MMA, 0-0Bellator)

Mr. Wonderful, the former Bellator light heavyweight champ is back in the cage against Bellator newcomer Albrektsson. Davis is a heavy favorite against the relatively unknown Albrektsson.

In Bellator, Davis has become a more complete fighter and is still one of the world’s best light heavyweights. Will Mr Wonder have another dominant performance or will a newcomer in Albrektsson make a statement?

Welterweight Ed Ruth(7-1MMA,7-1BMMA) vs Jason Jackson(10-3MMA,1-0BMMA)

Up and coming Bellator welterweight Ed “easy” Ruth has gained popularity after highlight reel knockouts in Bellator. His opponent Jason “The Ass Kicking Machine” Jackson is looking to extend his 3 fight win streak to 4.

Ruth is a heavy 3-1 favorite, but both will be looking to make statements wins in this fight. An impressive will by either will help them climb the ladder in the stacked Bellator 170lb division.

Women’s Flyweight Bec Rawlings(7-8MMA, 0-0Bellator Debut vs Ilara Jones(8-4MMA, 0-0Bellator)

Former UFC fighter Bec “Rowdy” Rawlings is back in MMA after leaving the UFC to compete in bare knuckle boxing. She is a fan favorite and also a favorite in this fight at 3-1 also.

Though, Rawlings had lost 4 fights in a row in MMA before going to bare knuckle boxing. The Brazilian Ilara Joanne being a relatively unknown to most fight fans also played a role in betting lines.

First Televised Fight at Heavyweight Jake Hager(2-0MMA, 2-0BMAA) vs Anthony Garrett

The former WWE superstar Jack “Swagger” Hager looks to extend his record to 3-0 and against the relatively unknown Garrett. Hager was a former wrestler at Oklahoma and has used that background to finish his first two opponents.

Swagger is a heavy favorite and no one expects this fight to go the distance.

Final Thoughts

Bellator tends to make matches that favor popular up and coming fighters and this card is no different. Aside from the main event, fans expect the more known and popular fighters to take home wins that night.

This card should be an entertaining appetizer for the $1 million dollar 170 final between MacDonald vs Lima 2 Saturday.

It’s a good weekend to be an MMA fan with 2 Bellator shows and another UFC event featuring Demian Maia vs Ben Askren on Saturday. There’s likely to be many entertaining fights this weekend for all you fight fans out there!
