It’s no surprise that even the top Hollywood celebrities would partake in the sport at some point! When it comes to celebrities, we already have a good amount of admiration for them as they play our favorite characters in the big screen. But tack on BJJ on top of that, and we gain even more respect for them.
Not only are they badasses in the movies, they can probably also kick your butt in in real life! In this article, we take a look at the top celebrity Jiu Jitsu Practitioners.
A famous celebrity known for hit TV sitcoms That 70’s Show and Two and a Half Men, along with several other movies, Ashton Kutcher is an avid BJJ practitioner. Probably no surprise here, Ashton Kutcher is one of the most famous celebrity Jiu Jitsu practitioners. He is currently a purple belt in BJJ under Rigan Machado.
Grammy nominated, multi-platinum singer and actress Demi Lovato is seen to practice BJJ regularly. You can see her in action as she sometimes seen practicing in social media. She may have begun her career in Barney and Friends, but this child star is all grown up! She is currently a Blue Belt in BJJ.
Known for his hit trilogy The Matrix, Keanu Reeves is known to practice a few forms of Martial Arts. He is a blackbelt in Judo. To prepare for his new role as mercenary assassin John Wick, he trained heavily with the Machado brothers. If you’ve seen the movies, you can see some of that training in action! You’ll be in for some action-packed grappling!
Famous celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain was known to be a consistent BJJ practitioner before he passed. The late celebrity chef trained under Igor Gracie, and could be seen practicing 7 days a week! At 59, he’s definitely goals! He had a blue belt in BJJ and was an IBJJF gold medalist.
Joe Rogan does it all - from Fear Factor, to stand up comedy, to UFC commentating, to podcasts, to Jiu Jitsu! Rogan has been practicing martial arts all his life. He was a frequent Taekwondo competitor in his younger days. He’s also Black Belt in BJJ under Eddie Bravo’s 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu. Rogan is no slouch on his feet or on the mats. We wouldn’t mess with him!
The late Fast and the Furious superstar Paul Walker was a brown belt in BJJ before his tragic car crash in 2013. He trained under Ricardo “Franjinha” Miller at Paragon Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
The man. The legend. Chuck Norris. One of the most famous celebrity Jiu Jitsu practitioners, we would be surprised if he didn’t practice BJJ! He is a walking living legend. When he does a push up, he pushes the Earth down! When a poisonous snake bites him, the snake dies from tasting Chuck’s blood. No one can beat Chuck Norris – not even Chuck Norris. True story. Chuck Norris is a black belt in BJJ and even rolled against the late Helio Gracie back in the day!
Suicide Squad star and actress Margot Robbie trained rigorously in BJJ for her role as Harley Quinn.
Ed O’Neil, probably more known as his TV personality Al Bundy from his hit TV comedy Married With Children, is a black belt in BJJ. That’s right. Al Bundy can kick your butt! He received his black belt from Rorion Gracie.
Famous actor and comedian Chris Pratt also practices a little bit of BJJ. This Guardians of the Galaxy star has a legit wrestling background. He was seen practicing some BJJ takedowns against Minotauro Nogeira, a former UFC and Pride Heavyweight Champ!
Dave Bautista, Guardian’s of the Galaxy’s Drax the Destroyer, would destroy you in the mats! He has a solid wrestling background and even did some pro-wrestling with the WWE! He is a purple belt in BJJ and trains under Cesar Gracie in Pleasant Hill, California.
Clark Gregg is BJJ Blackbelt under Renato Magno. Expect no less from Marvel’s Agent of Shield!
Millie Bobby Brown
Millie Bobby Brown, also known as “Eleven” in her hit Netflix show Stranger Things, has also joined the ranks of celebrity Jiu Jitsu practitioners. A girl of many talents, this young actress has steadily been improving her skills. She is a BJJ white belt and trains at the Phoenix Mixed Martial Arts & Fitness.
Another actor infected with the Jiu Jitsu bug is Hollywood actor and comedian Russell Brand. He has been seen training with Ryron and Rener Gracie. He also trains in England. Brand mentions: “Life is a struggle and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches you how to deal with it.” Spoken like a future BJJ addict! Expect to see him on the mats for some time!
Guy Ritchie is another celebrity Jiu Jitsu practitioner you should watch out for! He is a real badass on the mats. He is a Renzo Gracie blackbelt! Renzo isn’t known to give away free blackbelts so you know he’s legit. Guy Ritchie also trained with Roger Gracie in London before moving to the States.
This is a definite surprise! Jim Carrey, aka Ace Ventura Pet Detective, also practices BJJ! Although not much is known to where or how frequent he trains, it was confirmed that he does practice. UFC veteran and former champ Rich “Ace” Franklin, who is known to be Jim Carrey’s doppelganger did mention that Jim definitely trains and is a brown belt in BJJ.
Tom Hardy is sort of a badass in the movies. His roles are usually ones where he plays the tough guy you wouldn’t want to mess with. Well, you probably shouldn’t mess with him in real life either! He’s known to practice BJJ and MMA outside of his acting career. He practiced heavily for his role in the MMA movie Warrior. Hardy was also seen rolling against the Royal Marines in preparation for his role in Mad Max.
It’s no surprise here that the Black Widow knows a little bit of Jiu Jitsu! Scarlett Johansson trained BJJ with Rigan Machado to prep for the Marvel movies.
Another new addition to the list of celebrity Jiu Jitsu stars, comedian actor Vince Vaughn joins in on the action. He was seen rolling with Rener Gracie in an Instagram post.
Michael Clark Duncan
As an avid UFC and MMA fan, the late Michael Clark Duncan also partook in the sport before he passed from his heart attack. He received his blue belt from Rorion Gracie from the Gracie Academy in Torrence, California.
No surprises here! Jason Statham is a huge fan of the martial arts. He’s one of the biggest action stars in Hollywood today. And for good reason! You can easily tell if you watch his movies that he is a very active martial artist. He is currently a purple belt in BJJ under Renzo Gracie. He’s been practicing for over a decade.
Nicolas Cage has always been a fun one to watch. Even more so now that we know he does Jiu Jitsu! He trains under UFC hall of famer Royce Gracie. Nicolas Cage was actually chosen to star in the film “Jiu Jitsu.” The film will be based on the comic book, where a team of Jiu Jitsu experts are chosen to battle against Alien Invaders. He’ll be battling freakin Aliens! Good thing he practices BJJ to keep us safe from those invaders! Should be a fun watch.
Well Crickey! That’s a surprise! Steve Irwin, otherwise known as the Crocodile Hunter from his hit show Crocodile Dundee, practiced BJJ frequently before he passed. He was a huge fan of the sport and apparently loved to grapple! No wonder he could take on those crocs with ease!
Probably most known for her Resident Evil movies, Milla Jovovich is another famous actress that practices BJJ. She loves to meditate and do yoga. And she can probably choke you out!
Mario Lopez loves to stay in shape. He loves to exercise in his free time. Whether its lifting weights, running, or boxing, he’s always looking to stay in a good condition. He recently got into BJJ, and is now a Blue Belt in Jiu Jitsu. He trains at the Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu Academy. You can see him training with Keenan Cornelius also!
Hollywood superstar Halle Berry joins in on the action! The famous actress has recently got into training BJJ to prepare her for her role in John Wick 3. She joins Keanu Reeves as they battle an army of assassins. You can see her BJJ training paying off – some great action-packed grappling sequences on that one!
Famous Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker is also a big fan of the sport. This inked up bad boy frequently trains with his two kids at the Gracie Academy in Torrence, California.
R&B singer and actor Usher has also got bit by the BJJ bug. He trains with the Machado brothers when he’s in town. You can also see him training with Anderson Silva and Andre Galvao.
If you’ve watched some of Wesley Snipes’ movies, you can tell he is no slouch when it comes to martial arts. He is a seasoned vet with multiple disciplines to include Karate, Hapkido, Kung Fu, and Capoeira. He also practices with celebrity Jiu Jitsu trainer Rigan Machado. Snipes was even close to fighting Joe Rogan in the Octagon! Too bad it never happened – would’ve been a fun watch!
